Enra is on air with Anon playing requests and such right now on Radio Xenu, and I’m obsessively just eyeballing the Potato Salad Kickstarter by Zack Danger Brown. It’s freakin’ #PotatoMadness. Seriously. I talk about Kickstarter rather frequently on my show and crowdfunding as a whole. It’s a great way to cut out a record label and for fans to become part of the album-making experience; customized pre-order packages and all that goodness. This, of course, directly pertains to music.
I recently backed a project by Hidden Hospitals, and I’m happy to say that they reached their goal and are on their way to Nashville to record their debut full-length album! Hidden Hospitals was the 8th artist to ever be played on Neeshcast. Their first appearance was Episode 2: We’ll Sleep When We Are Dead with “Controlled Chaos.”
I also recently backed a project on PledgeMusic by K.Flay. She’s another early Neeshcast artist. K.Flay first appeared on Neeshcast with a 2fer, “Life = Trap” and “2 Weak,” in Episode 5: I Can’t Believe They’d Let You Speak. Man, that was actually the first Neeshcast that aired on Radio Xenu! Comin’ up on 2 years since that episode. It’s almost 2 years since I’ve had a new show for you every week on Wednesday nights, exposing the world to fabulous Underground, Independent, Do-It-Yourself music. More on that later. I want to give props to K.Flay’s fans real quick.
Years ago K.Flay did a The Zombies mashup on Billboard.com, and during that session she also performed an awesome “2 Weak” (which samples Grizzly Bear‘s “Two Weeks.” Oh my gosh, that song has been sampled so much! I just remembered that I had a bit ready for a few weeks ago on that and I never got to it. It shall fit this week.) She’s been mentioned in several articles on the Billboard.com website, but it wasn’t until this week that she actually appeared on the charts. That’s right. Life As A Dog, which I proudly backed, entered the Billboard Charts at #153 and is holding down the #2 Heatseeker Albums spot. K.Flay’s Life As A Dog is the #14 Rap Album this week on Billboard. I’m so proud to have a physical copy of that CD. I’m so proud of the art I support.
Alright so back to this Potato Salad Kickstarter. I originally came across it a few days ago when I decided to look into what projects exist within the “food” category. A friend had posted something up, and I felt it was blasphemous and delegitimizes the crowd-funding platform. This friend’s Kickstarter enraged me. The goal was to make a video of him cooking and eating something outrageous. I’m used to Kickstarter being for directly supporting a project of some sort. I feel it’s been a perfect outlet for creators to avoid directly seeking investors and then having to mold their product to fit the investor’s liking. The Potato Salad one pissed me off initially because it had $3,000 pledged (the original goal was $10). The campaign is for some guy to make Potato Salad for the first time. A few days later, I kept coming across posts on Facebook from different news outlets about this Kickstarter. It had gone up to several thousand.
When I began writing this blog, it had $34,521 pledged.
345,210% of the original goal.
For Potato Salad.
This is a fucking internet sensation. A vile mis-use of something fabulous. I don’t understand people sometimes. It’s like a Reddit or 4chan joke taken way too far. So now I will refresh and tell you how much money this campaign has raised.
3,240 people have vowed to throw an average of $11 toward this campaign.
I thought Hidden Hospitals wouldn’t make their goal. It was so nerve-wracking. They barely reached it by the end of the campaign. Just to explain something about Kickstarter- when you pledge, the money isn’t taken from you until the moment the campaign ends. At that time, if the project did not reach it’s goal, your money will not be taken & the project receives $0. So everyone continuing to donate to this Potato Salad Kickstarter knows that they are giving money toward this.
It’s now up to $35,336.
I started to look into the whole thing, and I guess the dude is renting a hall and having a Potato Salad Party, open to all “citizens of the internet.” It will be in Columbus, Ohio. He’ll make 4 different kinds of Potato Salad. Since many of the backers are from outside America, he’s also putting together a Potato Salad Recipe Book consisting of recipes from the countries who backed the project. There’s also talk of joining with local small businesses and really making an event out of it. According to Kickstarter’s Terms of Service, you can’t promise any of the money you raise to charity. It seems he’s being a responsible guy and is looking to spend the money on the event. Maybe he’ll do a Potato Salad Party tour. There’s also talk of encouraging attendees of the party to bring things to donate to charity. He’ll be on Good Morning America this morning. I’m intrigued to hear what he has to say for himself, past the Reddit AMA he did.
This is like a trainwreck that I can’t look away from. The whole thing is crazy, like that “Can this pickle get more fans than Nickleback?” group on Facebook that did in fact grow to more members than likes on Nickleback’s Facebook Page. There wasn’t money involved in that though. It was a simple mouse click. No one traded the cost of supporting an artist in that craziness (remember, the average $ pledged in the Potato Salad Kickstarter is $11- roughly the cost of most digital albums). I’m starting to now think of it as a phenomenon, rather than blasphemy, but still, man. Support artists.
I decided to pledge on a project that I could stand behind, to counteract this gross misuse of crowdfunding. Seriously, this Potato Salad joke has earned the guy a year’s salary.
Headless: A Feature-Length Horror Spectacular

The body count climbs as a skull-faced killer battles his inner-demons in this retro slasher epic from the creators of ‘Found’.
54% funded with 13 days to go.
Hold on, let me check on the Potato Salad again. It’s now up to $35,527 and has 25 days left. Dude is going to be on Good Morning America this morning. That number will shoot up. Their write-up about him was nice and flowery about him really showing the power of the great American BBQ staple. Hold on, I’m enraged again. This shows the power of… I don’t even know how to say it. We are evolving into Idiocracy. If you want to throw your money around, support real projects.
Speaking of which, you can always donate to Neeshcast at neeshcast.com/donate. I spend all the donations on my gear and directly purchasing music requested by listeners. Just about everything you hear on Neeshcast, I’ve purchased and directly supported.
Wait, better yet… Help Melissa Eppard and her family. She is one of the most beautiful souls I have ever known. Recently Melissa was diagnosed with breast cancer. She goes in for her first round of treatment next week. Donate to Melissa’s Healing Hope.
Potato Salad is now up to $35,568. Enough of that shit.
