i can only fall so many times before i’m broke, unrecognizable

Well, that about wraps up the all the World Cup hullabaloo. Germany just beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time, about 10 minutes ago. Not that I was watching. Instead of all that jazz I’ve been listening to Grieves – Winter & The Wolves (March 2014), Wess Meets West – When the Structures Fail Us (February 2014), Athletics – Who You Are Is Not Enough (June 2012), and Moving Mountains – “Foreword” EP (November 2008) while working on things like finally uploading Episode #51 of Neeshcast. Relatively mellow soundtrack, rather excellent for productivity. Except, I hadn’t listened to Athletics in far too long. I got completely distracted by the emotions the songs of Who You Are Is Not Enough evoke. Heck, I even broke down into tears during “III.” Such. Beautiful. Music. WYAINE truly is a masterpiece. I actually ranked it at #3 for my 2012 Albums of the Year list. It was also recently re-released along with instrumentals on Deep Elm Records. The digital version is STILL free. Your soul needs WYAINE. Grab Who You Are Is Not Enough. I got my (sold out) vinyl copy not too long ago. I’ve actually purchased quite a bit of physical music in the past few months.

2 Vinyl Records, 2 7″ split EPs, 9 CDs

Let’s see what we’ve got there. Top left is the Athletics Vinyl I previously mentioned. Top right is the 2007 perfect masterpiece from Kiss Kiss, Reality Vs. The Optimist. That vinyl was produced last year thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign. I actually discussed the campaign during Episodes #20 & #21 with lead singer/songwriter/guitarist/synth Josh Benash, so be sure to check out those episodes if you haven’t already. Picking up that record was a no-brainer. 2007 was divided into 3 albums for me. I was all about that Kiss Kiss LP, Porcupine Tree‘s Fear of a Blank Planet, and 3‘s The End is Begun. There’s still a few of those vinyl records left. Get Reality Vs. The Optimist on Vinyl.

Let’s discuss the two 7-inch splits. On the left is The Jazz June & Dikembe split. I spun the whole thing on the show last week. The EP features The Jazz June‘s first song in 12 years, “Over Underground” as well as a tune from Dikembe. I’m all about Dikembe these days. They’ll be releasing Mediumship on Tiny Engines Records August 5, 2014, but a few tunes have been released. “Gets Harder” is my jam! I spun it on Neeshcast June 25th, July 2nd, and requested it on ThePipShow on the 3rd. I don’t know what it is about it, but I’m in love. Anyway, that split was put out on both Topshelf Records (who are set to release a The Jazz June full-length) & Tiny Engines. It comes in 4 variants. Mine is greenish. The other EP is a 4-way Christmas split featuring You Blew It!, Dikembe, Have Mercy, and Kittyhawk. 250 were pressed and proceeds went to Toys For Tots.

CDs. Directly under Kiss Kiss is Icarus The Owl – Icarus The Owl (February 7, 2014). Oh shit, they’re in this region the next few days with Artifex Pereo. Looks like I’ll be goin’ to Jersey Tuesday night! To the right of Icarus The Owl is an album that was released the same day: Weerd Science – Red Light Juliet Broadcast 2: Steady Straight Lights/Sudden Dark Turns (February 2014). Last year we heard from Weerd Science in Episode #42 all about RLJ1. The boys are working on RLJ3 as we speak.
Beneath Icarus The Owl and Red Light Juliet Broadcast 2: Steady Straight Lights/Sudden Dark Turns is VonEsper‘s debut LP, Stalemate. I snagged #60 of their unique 100 hand-painted CDs. To the right of that is Wess Meets West’s EP – The Sun The Moon The Master (September 2009). Oh crap, I forgot their Chevaliers (November 2011) LP in my car.
The bottom row is Icarus The Owl – Love Always, Leviathan (June 2012), K.FlayLife As A Dog (June 2014), Wess Meets West – When The Structures Fail UsVoyeur’s KaleidoscopeA Fearful Page In The Record of My Existence (January 2013), and Mr. BreakdownThe Purple Bag (April 2014).

So those are my latest physical acquisitions. #SupportIndependent. As previously mentioned, I finally uploaded Episode #51. Ironic timing considering it was the 1 year on Radio Xenu anniversary show. This week is officially Neeshcast Anniversary week. 2 years! Kinda fun to listen to the hijinx of the 1 year show. It’s up at Neeshcast.com/51, on Mixcloud (it displays the songs playing as they’re playing, and if you have an account and link it to your last.fm- the songs will be scrobbled), on Tumblr, on Stitcher Radio, and on iTunes. The show was days before Attack of the 90’s premiered (they are celebrating their first birthday Saturday night). I discussed that, shared my first impression of the Joey Eppard & Friends project, talked about IRL crowd-funding, recounted the first Radio Xenu AutoDJ jam I fell in love with, chatted about covers that I didn’t think were covers, played some new stuff, and there were cameos by my fellow RX DJ’s.

Neeshcast #51: You’re not punk, and I’m telling everyone (FIRST RX anniversary!) by Neesh on Mixcloud

Fabulous playlist.

Oh, also in Episode #51 I discussed my first #EmoNightNYC experience. It’s crazy how things parallel. This month I may be going to my second Emo Night. There’s one that’ll be the official Braid afterparty. I think the Braid dudes are DJing a set too. Sounds awesome!

Actually, let’s talk more about weird crazy ironic parallels. Last week I had technical difficulties. The show was completed and ready to go, when my internet decided it would be funny to slow to a crawl and tell me that a file that usually takes 5-10 minutes to upload would take 9 hours. The file wasn’t going to be uploaded in time for my usual 7-11pm Central slot. Long story short, Episode #32 played, half of the planned July 9, 2014 show played, Gross Misconduct Live went on, and we got the second half of the planned Neeshcast after they wrapped up. During the planned show I fangirled over the new Braid album, No Coast (it’s their first album in 16 years, and it’s fantastic). #32 starts with a Braid track. #32 continues on with a Greg Dunn kick (he’s from Moving Mountains and is an engineer/producer)… dude’s currently on tour along with Fred Mascherino (aka The Color Fred of Terrible Things, ex-Taking Back Sunday, Breaking Pangaea) & Kenny Bridges (Moneen) as additions to the Say Anything Hebrews touring band. #32 also has Sloss Minor (they were known as Death in the Park at the time of the March 2013 episode), K.Flay, and a few other artists… who I spun in the planned show due to current happenings with them. It’s hard to explain. Just was super coincidental and blew my mind a little bit.

At the end of this post I’ll include the playlist from the past 30 days. It’s that time again to submit the playlist for Streaming Royalties!

Shit, I gotta talk about Radio Xenu’s Top 20 Mid-Year Countdown!

So, Thursday night was the Radio Xenu 2014 Mid-Year Top 20 Countdown. Over several weeks listeners were encouraged to vote for however many songs tickle their fancy. Specifically the songs had to be “AutoDJ” songs. You see, when there isn’t a hosted show on RX, there’s a fabulous playlist, curated by Pip (one of his Station Manager duties is doing that Music Director thang). Radio Xenu is definitely a music station. Indie, Rock, Alternative, and there’s a few talk shows. But yeah, last week in my huge blog update I included a list of the songs I voted for. 32 songs, ha.

Tuesday night during @JuggernautJaret’s solo show, The Canadian Virus, he played his own top 20 favorite Radio Xenu jams, mixed in with other tracks from AutoDJ. That shit PUMPED ME UP! ADJ is AWESOME!

So awesome, in fact, that 97 artists in total were voted for in the Top 20 Mid-Year Countdown!

I was super interested to hear what fellow listeners picked, considering how varied our tastes are. During my show last week I predicted that The Neighbourhood would be the most requested artist and that “Doses & Mimosas” by Cherub would soooo be #1. Outside of that, I had no idea how the countdown would turn out.

7 of the songs I voted for made the cut. Hell yeah! But the thing that I was really stoked about was that 3 of the tunes in the countdown were added to ADJ after they were well received during a Neeshcast airing.

I don’t play songs specifically for the station. My show is my show. Specialty, niche shizz.

That being said, it’s freakin exciting when my tunes get added into rotation. The 3 that made it to the countdown were:

That’s right, the guests of Neeshcast #25 broke the top 10! Squee!

Make sure to browse the full list. It’s all here. The link will also give you a good idea of what tunes get spun on Radio Xenu. You should totally listen with the free TuneIn app when you’re on the go.

Look out for the first official Neeshcast Compilation! We’re gonna party like we’ve been on Radio Xenu for 2 years. wooo!
